Manifold Plug Removal

Planning on re- installing my smog system on my 73. What is the best way to remove those manifold plugs that I'm sure have been there for more than 40 years? Have been told to soak with PB Blaster and use a six point socket. Should heat be applied? I'm afraid of breaking them off or cracking the manifold. Also what is the correct water pump pulley to use for the smog pump? There are only two pulleys on my car now. My car has power steering but no air conditioning. Thanks for any input.
