Knocking in engine

First time Corvette owner; had 1996 C4 LT4 for about a month. Have not driven it but about twice until had mechanic to look it over. Needed new serpentine belt. Had work done. Mechanic has now discovered a knocking; maybe rods. I know nothing about mechanic work. Any suggestions as to what this could be? If it is a rod knocking, what are my options? Likely not good, huh? Any good Corvette mechanics in Birmingham area?
