Driving through smaller cities is one of the best parts of going on a ride with around 65 other Corvettes, according to Dave Lindgren, of Minneapolis, who owns a 2006 Coupe Automatic.
He said the shiny wheels of all the cars will fall in line at stop signs or parking lots and people will come out of their homes and businesses to see. That’s a good summary of what happened on Saturday as the 17th Annual Color Run of Corvette cars streamed through Hibbing. People stopped to wave and take a look at the fine display of vehicles from 2007 models to classic Corvettes from 1963.
This year’s run was themed “It’s the Pits” as one of the main attractions was Hibbing’s Hull Rust Mine View. Corvette owners also stopped at the VFW Post 8510 for lunch and then toured the Greyhound Bus Museum. The visit to Hibbing was part of a three-day tour which started at Black Bear Casino on Friday morning. Owners traveled throughout Northeastern Minnesota making stops at Grand Portage Lodge, Fortune Bay Casino, Bear River, Hibbing and Buhl.
The group is a combination of Corvette owners, whether joining individually or with a club. Four clubs were represented on the run including Corvettes North, with owners from across Northeastern Minnesota; Classic Corvette Club, from the Twin Cities; Central Minnesota Corvette Association, of St. Cloud; and Suburban Corvette Club, with owners also from the Twin Cities area.
“This serves to spread goodwill among Corvette owners,” said Jack Armstrong, primary organizer and a member of Corvettes North. “We meet new people and have a really good time.”
Armstrong said over the years they have toured regions of Northern Minnesota, Northern Wis-consin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Each year, Armstrong accesses the roads and the sights and makes a plan.
Lindgren, who now owns his 14th Corvette, said he puts on around 8,000 miles per year “just playing” on trips like this. This is Ron Weeks’ fourth Corvette run. He’s part of the Suburban Corvette Club, but likes driving his car to new areas and meeting the many other owners that share his passion.
“It is almost like a family reunion,” he said. “Yet, no one is related except by Corvettes.”
